The Brahma Kamal is a rare flower known to bloom only after sunset and just once a year in the higher reaches of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand.


Brahma Kamal is called the King of Himalayan Flowers, and is also the state flower of Uttarakhand.

Brahma Kamal, the state flower of Uttarakhand in India is one of the most famous flowers seen in the Himalayas. It is scientifically known as Saussurea obvallata which comes under the Sunflower family, Asteraceae. ... The Indian Postal Department has issued a postal stamp to commemorate this beautiful Himalayan flower.

The flower show has been part of the institution’s history for 35 years, and it is conducted to mark the birth anniversary of the founder, J N Tata. Flowering plants likely originated between 149 and 256 million years ago, said the study published in the journal New Phytologist.
